Forms that need to be completed (for example Holiday Insurance Cancellation forms) should be handed at reception. Usually, they are completed within 30 working days of payment receipt, the exception being if the doctor concerned is off sick or on holiday. The reception staff can advise on the fee involved. The forms should be collected from reception where payment is taken.
Lister Medical Centre can provide travel vaccinations for the traveller abroad. Where possible, please book an appointment well in advance of your travel arrangements to ensure you receive maximum protection. Please see Travel Heath and Immunisations.
Lister Medical Centre runs its own smoking cessation clinics for individuals wanting to quit smoking. If you are interested, make an appointment to see one of our Health Care Assistants.
At present there is One Doctor at Lister Medical Centre who provide minor surgery sessions on a weekly basis. All Partners refer patients to them for treatment. The type of surgery undertaken include the treatment of ingrown toe nails and the removal of sebaceous cysts and moles. We also store liquid nitrogen for the removal of lesions such as verrucae. This procedure is undertaken by all doctors, routinely, in their surgeries.
Our Community Midwives provide antenatal care along with the doctors but also have additional clinics. They also visit at home when “booking” a new patient for maternity care and also visit at home after delivery. The “team” also follows the client in to hospital for delivery of the baby.
Antenatal, Postnatal and Six week baby checks
Joint antenatal care is provided by the doctors and the midwives in regular weekly clinics. Uncomplicated pregnancies are managed exclusively within the practice although ultrasound scans are needed at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Although delivery is encouraged at the hospital, postnatal care is undertaken as soon as the mother and baby return home (for the first 10 days). Subsequent to this, the health visitor makes a home visit to introduce herself and advise on further care of the baby. Between 6 to 8 weeks, mothers are invited for a postnatal check. At that time, any concerns can be discussed and family planning advice given. In addition, the baby is given a comprehensive check.
Maternity timetable for significant dates during your pregancy.
You can now self-refer to physiotherapy and appointment letters will be forwarded to patients from the Community Physiotherapy team based at Addison House. Please see reception for further information.
Health Checks can be performed on request and are usually undertaken by the practice nurses. Apart from the usual examination expected, Lister Medical Centre has a cholesterol testing machine, a spirometer (for the investigation of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and a 24 hour sphygmomanometer (blood pressure machine), for the investigation of raised blood pressure.

These are offered to all new registrations. At present, these checks are provided by our health care assistants.

Our dietician runs a weekly clinic on patients referred by their doctor. The clinic is not for uncomplicated weight reduction but is provided for patients with medical problems where dietetic help would prove useful (i.e. diabetes, raised cholesterol, bowel disorders).
Dietary advice for hyperlipidaemia (raised cholesterol) and diabetes are the most common reasons for referral. In comparison, the role of the hospital dietician has evolved largely to provide nutritional support to the malnourished and for acute referrals e.g. cardio protective advice following a myocardial infarction.
The demand for dietary advice is increasing for a number of reasons but notably National Service Frameworks (NSFs) for coronary heart disease (CHD), the elderly and the increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes. The number of newly diagnosed diabetics seen by dieticians has increased locally by 94% since 1998. There is a much greater awareness of the link between diet and health both amongst health professionals and patients.
There are many other conditions requiring dietetic services as part of or all of treatment, to help relieve symptoms or to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Diabetes is an extremely common disease affecting some 2.5% of the population. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause heart, kidney, eye and arterial disease so tight management of the problem is essential. We have a Diabetic Nurse Specialist who will assist, under the supervision of the doctors, with the management of patients who have type 1 or type II diabetes. Patients with diabetes will also be seen by chiropodists, dieticians and opticians (for free annual eye checks).
