✅ Off Sick for 7 Days or Less
- You don’t need a doctor’s note.
- Your employer might ask you to fill in a self-certification form to say you were sick.
- You can get this form from your employer.
✅ Off Sick for More Than 7 Days
- You may need a fit note (also called a sick note) from a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist 21.
- The fit note says:
- You are not fit for work, or
- You may be fit for work with some changes (like shorter hours or lighter duties)
📝 What Is a Fit Note?
- It helps your employer understand how your illness affects your work.
- It can also help you get Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) or other benefits.
- You don’t have to pay for a fit note if you’ve been sick for more than 7 days 1.

📅 How Long Is a Fit Note For?
