Sickness Certificates

Feeling Sick and Off Work? Here’s What You Need to Know

✅ Off Sick for 7 Days or Less

  • You don’t need a doctor’s note.
  • Your employer might ask you to fill in a self-certification form to say you were sick.
  • You can get this form from your employer.

✅ Off Sick for More Than 7 Days

  • You may need a fit note (also called a sick note) from a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist 21.
  • The fit note says:
    • You are not fit for work, or
    • You may be fit for work with some changes (like shorter hours or lighter duties)

📝 What Is a Fit Note?

  • It helps your employer understand how your illness affects your work.
  • It can also help you get Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) or other benefits.
  • You don’t have to pay for a fit note if you’ve been sick for more than 7 days 1.

🏥 Who Can Give You a Fit Note?

  • – GP or hospital doctor
  • – Nurse
  • – Pharmacist
  • – Physiotherapist
  • – Occupational therapist

📅 How Long Is a Fit Note For?

  • Usually up to 3 months at a time if your illness is new.
  • Your doctor may want to see you again before giving another one.

❗ Important

  • Fit notes are only for medical problems.
  • If you’re having trouble at home or work, your doctor may suggest other ways to get help.
